The Invictors "Put Her Down" (TPE)
Wow, have I ever been neglectful. No blog posts since August? Well, my friends, I apologize. I want to keep sharing the sounds of Georgia soul music at a faster pace than I can put together the kinds of in depth information such as some of my last handful of posts, so the next batch will be more or less the 45s with less information. But it's the records you want to hear anyway, right?Today's selection comes from a doo wop group with a clutch of very sought after 45s, The Invictors. These lads, as far as I can tell, recorded four 45s for the Atlanta-based TPE label and don't seem to have been on anyone's radar outside of Georgia during their time together. Shortly before they began recording, there was another group by the same name which operated out of Pennsylvania. They recorded one 45, "I'll Always Care For You" / "I Don't Wanna Go" for the Bee label. These don't seem to be the same groups.
Many, if not all of The Invictors songs (I haven't been fortunate enough to have seen or heard all of the 45s) were written by Levi Moon, about whom I've been able to learn very little I'm very sorry to say.
"Put Her Down" is the flip side to their last single, "I Took A Chance" from 1963. You'll hear pretty quickly that the fellas were capable of some top shelf R&B tunes in addition to their better known group vocal doo wop ballads. And then check out that tasty guitar break! No wonder people are after this 45, though I don't know that I've ever heard anyone on the soul or R&B scenes bumping up this title before.
So I'm sorry again for being absent, but keep your eye on this space as there are some great Georgia records for me yet to share with you! And when I can, I'll still share the longer, more in depth articles too. Hint...there's one already in the works, and about somebody who has been mentioned on this blog before!
