Importance of non-verbal communication

Importance of non-verbal communication, Advantages of non-verbal communication,Functions of non-verbal communication

Hello dear friends here you will get Importance of non-verbal communication, Advantages of non-verbal communication,Mga pakinabang ng mga di-pandiwang komunikasyon, Functions of non-verbal communication, Purpose of non-verbal communication and Disadvantages demerits of non-verbal communication, What are the drawbacks or limitations of non-verbal communication? Friends I have written an article What is the most important type of non-verbal communication? last day.

Non-verbal communication is an important supplement to verbal communication. Experts in business communication advocated that sometimes non-verbal communication is more powerful and effective than verbal and written communication. In all 93 percent of the meaning in face to face communication is transferred through non-verbal symbols (Albert Mehrabian- 1968).

To explain the importance of non-verbal communication: Prof. Graham and Jennings mentioned that “that total impact of any message is probably most affected by the blending of non-verbal and verbal communication."

Function, Advantage, Purpose or Importance of non-verbal communication are as follows:

1. Clear explanation:
Through non-verbal symbols we can support words or verbal communication. For example most of the time when we say ‘yes’ then we also nod our head. That is, non-verbal symbols provide clear explanation to verbal communication.

2. Re-state:
Facial expressions and body movements restate or emphasize our views and opinions.

3. Indicative:
Non-verbal communication tools are indispensable to indicate something. When we say “this is our college,” then we also point out it by using pointing finger.

4. Control:
By non-verbal symbols we can control the behavior of others. For example by showing ‘Yellow card’ to a football player the referee can warn him to maintain the rules of the game.

5. Knowledge transfer:
Non-verbal cues or signals are only way to transfer knowledge to deaf and dumb persons.

6. Exchange of feelings:
The basic need for communication is exchange of feelings, thoughts and ideas. Non-verbal symbols are natural and efficient tools for exchanging feelings. Through non-verbal cues we can even share our views with the people of other counties.

7. Time saving:
In a busy business center or in a factory executives and supervisions provide instructions to employees by using non-verbal signals. In this way they can save their valuable time.

At last it can be safely stated that non-verbal communication is a must for overall communication and without non-verbal communication we can not even think about our daily life.

Disadvantages demerits of non-verbal communication. What are the drawbacks or limitations of non-verbal communication?

Through non-verbal communication I supportive to verbal communication and it can not be avoided, but there are some limitations.

Disadvantages or demerits of non-verbal communication are as follows:

1. Different meanings:
There is no universal or single meaning of non-verbal symbols. Same symbol have different meanings in different cultures. For example a thumbs-up symbol means “things are under control” or “sign or confidence” but in our country showing thumbs-up means humiliate others.

Thumbs-up
2. Inconsistent:
It is true that non-verbal symbols enhance verbal meanings. But sometimes they may alter the actual meaning and create confusion.

3. Limited scope:
Though non-verbal communication provide clear explanation to verbal communication, but it alone can’t fulfill all communication need.

What is the most important type of non-verbal communication?

Hello dear friends here you will get What is the most important type of non-verbal communication?, Ano ang pinaka-mahalagang uri ng di-pandiwang komunikasyon? I have written an article How the interviewees take preparation for the interview? last day.

Non-verbal communication generally linked with verbal communication which can not be avoided. There are different types of non-verbal communication like, body language, time language, touching behavior, paralanguage etc. among these types ‘body language’ is considered as the most important type of non-verbal communication.

In explaining the importance of body language Prof.S.P. Robbins said that, “Body language is a significant part of any face to face communication”.

Why body language is so important?
For the following reasons body language is considered as the most important type of non-verbal communication.

1. Pervasive:
Body language is pervasive in that sense one just cannot avoid it. Consciously or unconsciously our inner states of emotion expressed through movements of different parts of the body. It includes facial and eye expressions, gestures, postures, etc.

2. Visible:
Body language is considered more significant than other types of non-verbal communication, because it is visible. That is an individual need not to be more attentive to observe the movement of the body.

3. Easy to understand:
Though body movements have different meanings in different cultures, but an individual of the same culture can easily understand the body language of others.

4. Universal acceptance:
We have already mentioned that meanings of body language are not same in different cultures but there are some basic body movements which have universal acceptance.

5. Understandable to illiterate people:
Even an illiterate person can express his/her feelings through body movements and also understand the meaning of the body movements of others.

Form the above discussion it can be stated that, for it’s wide acceptance and other distinct advantages body language is considered as the most important type of non-verbal communication.

Fig- 1 : Different facial expressions
1. Facial expressions :
Face is the index of mind. It tells us what is happening within a man. Facial expression, especially movements of eyes have different meanings. Happiness, Sorrow, Fear and all types of emotion can be expressed through our face and eyes.

2. Tone and Volume of voice ( Paralanguage ) :
Different tone of voice can create different meanings of same word. In the words of lesikar and Pettit, “Paralanguage involves how we say something. “Thus our interest or boredom, happiness or sorrow or any other attitudes can be expressed through pattern of voice.

3. Body language :
One of the major types of non-verbal communication is body language or ‘Kinesics’. We can also communicate our inner feeling through body movements. Not only by face and eyes but we can also convey message by moving our hands, by shaking our shoulders or by nodding our head.

4. Gestures :
Gesture is also a body movement but is a deliberate body movement to convey a specific message. Gestures include movements of the arms, legs, hands and head.
Example : By waving our hands we express ‘good-bye’; by shaking our head from side to side we express “we do not know”.

5. Personal appearance:
Personal appearance includes our clothing, our grooming and our consciousness to styles. It projects our self images to others. A person’s social status and attitude expressed through his / her personal appearance.

6. Touching behavior :
Touching is an effective non-verbal communication tool. Different ‘touch’ bear different meanings, for example.

Type of touch
Meaning
Pat on the back or on the arm    >
Slapping    >
Touching head by fingers (in subcontinent) >
To support others opinion or Boostup
Morale
To express anger
To bless or to express goodwill .

7. Time language :
There is an old saying, “Time is money” – in modern business culture time is really important. By using our own attitude towards time we can convey specific message. For example, in our country sometimes some high officials show their importance by making other people wait for them. We can also demonstrate our eagerness or positive attitude by arriving at time.

8. Space and distance :
Space and distance are also meaningful non-verbal communication technique. Two colleagues of same rank can sit side by side in an office or even can walk keeping and in hand but a subordinate has to maintain a specific distance from his boss. Thus space end distance between different individuals indicate their position and relationship among them.

9. Silence :
Like other types of non-verbal communication a complete silence also can transmit our inner view of mind. Both positive and negative attitude can be expressed through silence.
